THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)

Rotary's Wheel Emblem
Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days.  The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion.  The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement."

Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads.  Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians.

Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes, was adopted by the "Rotary International Association."

A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft.

So, in 1923, the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

SPEAKER

The presentation this meeting is Annie Lennox who speaks on why she is an HIV/AIDS activist.  I hope you'll enjoy this interesting and inspiring presentation.

After decades of global fame as part of Eurythmics and as a solo artist, Annie Lennos was moved by Nelson Mandela's call to stop the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa, where it disproportionately affects women and children.  She founded the SING campaign in 2007 to raise both awareness and money.  "This is an illness that has a lot of stigma," Lennox says on her video blog.  "What we need to do is normalize HIV."

Drawing on her talents, she combines music and film to put a human face on the crisis and emotionally connect people to the cause.  South Africa has a tradition of activist songs and singing; inspired by this, in spring 2007 Lennox invited 23 female artists to record the benefit single "Sing."  The record incorporates the South African activist song "Jikelele," which means "global treatment."

So far, the sales of "Sing" have raised 100,000 pounds, while other appearances since then have multiplied that sum.  SING's money goes to support efforts such as the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), which works to fight monther-to-child transmission of HIV>

Lennox is active in many other causes, both personal and political; in 2008 she was awarded the Services to Humanity Award by the British Red Cross.

Please comment thoughtfully about this speaker in your review of our meeting.

WHEN YOU START WITH ROTARY

************

THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)

The Secretariat
Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

Many Rotarians consider the Secretariat simply another name for the RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A.  Actually, it is much more.  While it does include the entire World Headquarters, the Secretariat encompasses nearly 600 individuals working to make Rotary International run smoothly and effectively.

The term describes the entire operations of the General Secretary and his staff.  The Secretariat includes all eight Rotary Service Centers (formerly called Branch Offices) around the world, all of the staff serving in those centers, as well as all staff assigned to The Rotary Foundation.

Its sole purpose is to serve the clubs, districts, and administrative officers of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.

RI World Headquarters, in a building called One Rotary Center in Evanston, is the headquarters of the Secretariat.

THE SPEAKER - The main event

The speaker for this meeting is a young African boy, William Kamkwamba.  He has a truly inspiring story to tell.  I hope you will agree - and I think you will.

A little background - At age 14, in poverty and famine, a Malawian boy built a windmill to power his family's home.  Here he is, at age 22, sharing in his own words the moving tale of invention that changed his life.
"I looked at my father, and I looked at those dry fields (in Malawi).  It was a future I couldn't accept."  (William Kamkwamba)

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE - September 21

PEACE - A STAR-STUDDED VIDEO
South Sudanese musician Emmanuel Jal

Background:

Few have seen reality's harsher side like South Sudanese musician Emmanuel Jal. A former child soldier, Jal is now an activist, using his art to take social and political action. With his triumphant new video for "We Want Peace – Reloaded," Jal gets assists from former President Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, Ringo Starr, George Clooney, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Dispatch, O.A.R., D.M.C., Das Racist and more. But despite the smiles all around, the song's message is serious.

"The inspiration for 'We Want Peace' comes from my history and the issues that are happening all the time. A guy called Clinton Outten, 'Roachie' – my cowriter and producer – helped put the whole song together," Jal tells Rolling Stone. "This song was used to put a spotlight in Sudan and South Sudan to protect civilians."

THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)
Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

The Official Rotary Flag

An official flag was formally adopted by Rotary International at the 1929 Convention in Dallas, Texas.  The Rotary flag consists of a white field with the official wheel emblem emblazoned in gold in the center of the field.

The four depressed spaces on the rim of the Rotary wheel are colored royal blue.  The words "Rotary" and "International" printed at the top and bottom depressions on the wheel rim are also gold.  The shaft in the hub and the keyway of the wheel are white.

The first official Rotary flag reportedly was flown in Kansas City, Missouri, in January 1915.  In 1922, a small Rotary flag was carried over the South Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd, a member of the Winchester, Virginia, Rotary Club.  Four years later, the admiral carried a Rotary flag in his expedition to the North Pole.

Some Rotary clubs use the official Rotary flag as a banner at club meetings.  In these instances, it is appropriate to print the words "Rotary Club" above the wheel symbol, and the name of the city, state, or nation below the emblem.

The Rotary flag is always prominently displayed at the World Headquarters as well as all conventions and official events of Rotary International.

THE ABCs OF ROTARY  (by Cliff Dochterman)
Cliff Dochterman
RI President, 1992-93

Definition of Rotary

How do you describe the organization called "Rotary"?

There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of a million Rotarians.  There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical standards, concern for other people and many more descriptive qualities.

In 1976, the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary.  They turned to the three men who were then serving on Rotary's Public Relations Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared.  After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications:

"Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world."
Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?"
